MAGAZINE DEVELOPMENT

This is a basic plan of a film magazine it follows the codes and conventions of all film magazines. When we start developing our magazine we may change the positioning of some items on the page in order to compliment the image and put forward the ideas we want the audience to gain from our magazine front cover.

We plan for the image to have a direct mode of address, not just to hail in the audience but as its a horror film, you will be able to experience and relate to the actors emotion. This should inspire thoughts of fear and intruige as we are planning to feature the main character in the film which is the reason the audience will be viewing this film. We plan to photograph an image that provokes thought from the audience, to hopefully result in a sale for the magazine and a promotion for the film trailer.

The colour scheme is going to subtle and only a few basic colours will be used. This is so that the typography doesn't attract more attention then the image. We may even use one intense colour to draw the eye into the important, 'hooking' information, to engage the audience. The colours used will be complimentary to the image to make the magazine look visually appealing.

Typography selection is going to be a hard process, as there are so many font types available. We are inspired by the strangers typography style and the glow on the font, which adds a sense of abnormality and mystery to the film. All the typography will be matching, or of the same style apart from the heading, which have a direct link to the film in order to emphasise that the film is the focus of the magazine front cover and that particular heading is relating to the image. The magazine logo will also be of its 'known' style and colour so that the audience can recognise from just a glance at what magazine it is.

This is the logo we decided to use on the front cover of our magazine and also the name we have decided on. After researching existing film magazines we drew inspiration from the popular magazine 'FILM'. This is when we thought we would go with the idea of a film reel, hence the chosen font. This instantly brings connotations of film, therefore the audience would know exactly what to expect when picking up the magazine. It is following the codes and conventions of a film magazine logo in the sense that it was common for the title to be all in capital letters but we are also challenging the codes and conventions by not using bold, simplistic font - we want our magazine to stand out and offer something different.

First we put the main conventions of a magazine front cover on our potential magazine front. Sacrifice again follows the same font and colour of the poster and trailer, again to link all three of them together and to help the audience relate to them. The magazine heading is Reel, which we thought was clever as it links to the film industry and this magazines genre is film. We have also included a barcode which is a concrete convention of a magazine. Hooks have also been used to encourage the reader to purchase the magazine. The colour scheme is black white and red, which is the theme of the poster and the trailer, and we felt it was vital for all of the media products to link.

We then added more text to the front page to try and hail in the target audience. We put features of the content of the magazine on the front in an attempt to hook the audience into reading the magazine. Again we chose the font to be of a colour within the colour scheme.

Once we had decided on the text were going to include, we added the image and it all came to life. Again we have used direct mode of address which is a convention for a film magazine, using this method we hoped that when engaging eye contact with the model that the reader will be hailed through interpellation to picking up the magazine and purchasing it, but also watching the film. Using direct mode of address also makes it more intense and personal to the reader viewing it, as they are 'engaging in eye contact'. A mid shot being used on a magazine front cover is also a typical convention we decided to follow. This also allowed us to include the iconography of the candle featured in our trailer which not only links this to the trailer but also connotes the horror genre. Black and white has been used again on the image so that it feels mysterious and dark, as well as continuing to link with the other media publications. This may challenge the codes and conventions of a music magazine but we think it is essential in order to represent our genre and link it to our other texts making them a whole package.

After looking at existing film publications, we decided we wanted this issue to be dedicated to the horror genre with our film as the main focus on the front cover as this has previously been done with other big blockbuster movies on film magazine front covers. We very much wanted to market our magazine as a niche magazine for a very particular audience. We decided to not add straplines and keep the front cover very minimal.

Although the idea of a niche magazine greatly appealed to us, we decided if we wanted our film to reach a larger audience and become well known we were going to have to market our magazine as mainstream. We added more straplines and hooks in order to target more people with different aspects of our magazine being stated on the front cover. We still wanted to follow the convention of having our magazine front cover dedicated to the horror genre and the main focus on our film, therefore not having any other smaller images on the front cover. We still wanted to challenge the conventions by having the black and white image.
